Springtime is often the moment we open our swim drawer and realize it may be time for a thoughtful refresh. Whether you’re rebuilding your collection or simply adding a few new suits this season, intention makes all the difference.
We asked personal stylist and fashion blogger Tara West (@tarawestfashion) to share her approach to building a swim wardrobe that feels modern yet lasting—one rooted in versatility, thoughtful trends, and pieces that transition seamlessly from day to night.
Her philosophy? Fewer, better pieces, chosen with intention.

The Three Pieces That Build a Spring Swim Wardrobe
“If I were building a spring swim wardrobe from scratch, I’d focus on three pieces that balance trend, versatility, and longevity,” Tara shares.
“The goal is a wardrobe that can evolve without needing constant replacement.”
1. A High-Quality Neutral One-Piece
This is the foundation. In black, deep navy, olive, or chocolate, a well-constructed one-piece works as swim, a styling base, and even resort wear when paired with trousers or a skirt. Choosing one with subtle texture or a modern neckline keeps it feeling current without locking it to one season.
The neutral one-piece is the ultimate chameleon. For day, it works under relaxed linen trousers or oversized poplin shorts with leather sandals and a simple tote for a family vacation. For a more elevated resort look, layer it under a sheer or open-weave knit dress, or style it like a bodysuit with tailored wide-leg pants and sculptural jewelry. The goal is to lean into its minimalism!

2. A Textured Bikini in a Seasonal Color
A ribbed, crinkle, or knit bikini instantly modernizes a suit while aging far better than loud prints. This is where you can lean into seasonal color trends like mineral tones, soft pastels, or rich earth shades without sacrificing longevity.
Let the texture do the visual work and keep styling soft and tactile: gauze button-downs, cotton sarongs, crochet or knit layers, and natural accessories like raffia or woven leather are perfect for a girls' trip. If the bikini color is trend-driven—mineral pastels, earth tones, or deep jewel shades—echo it subtly through accessories rather than matching it exactly.

3. A Sport-Leaning or Performance Silhouette
A sleek, slightly athletic suit—with a zip detail, contrast piping, or sculpting fabric—adds modern edge while being genuinely functional. It also reflects one of the strongest long-term shifts in swim: the blend of performance and fashion.
The sport-leaning suit benefits from contrast styling. Pair it with tailored or polished pieces to balance the athletic influence, perfect for a mixed resort setting. A crisp boxer short, an oversized blazer thrown over bare shoulders, or sleek nylon track pants with minimalist sandals. It also pairs naturally with technical or modern accessories like wrap sunglasses, clean sneakers, or a structured crossbody bag.

The Swim Trends Defining the Moment
With so many trends to try, we asked Tara for her top picks:
Natural-but-Elevated Color Palettes
This season’s color story feels grounded but refined. Designers are leaning into earth and mineral tones—sand, almond, clay rose, olive, emerald, lavender, and deep navy. These shades feel expensive without trying, and they bridge the gap between minimalism and richness. They also layer easily across resort wardrobes, which is part of their appeal.

Futuristic Shine and Bio-Digital Influence
On the opposite end of the spectrum, swim is embracing a sleek, forward-looking aesthetic. Liquid metallic finishes, chrome-like fabrics, and bioluminescent or ocean-inspired digital prints are emerging as statement pieces. The key to keeping this wearable is restraint in silhouette—clean cuts paired with high-impact fabric.

Texture as a Luxury Signal
Texture is one of the most important quiet trends of 2026. Crochet, ribbed knits, crinkle stretch fabrics, and emerging 3D knit constructions add dimension without relying on loud color or prints. Even minimalist suits feel elevated when texture becomes the focal point.

Sport-Luxe and Performance-Driven Silhouettes
Swim continues to borrow from performance wear. Think zip fronts, contrast piping, compression shaping, and surf-inspired long-sleeve silhouettes — all executed in more refined, fashion-forward fabrics. It reflects a broader shift toward clothing that is both functional and aesthetic.

The Trends Most Likely to Last
According to Tara, these trends are here to stay:
Minimal Neutrals and Core Classics. Neutrals remain foundational. These shades transcend seasonal cycles and work across decades of swim styling. Investment swim almost always lives here.

Retro-Rooted Silhouettes. High-waisted bottoms, bandeau tops, and clean one-piece shapes continue to resurface because they solve real fit and styling needs. The details may evolve, but the core shapes rarely disappear.

Sustainability as a Baseline Expectation. More than a trend, sustainability is becoming infrastructure. Recycled nylon, regenerated fibers, and durability-focused construction are increasingly standard rather than niche.

Shopping Swim with Intention
When shopping online, Tara recommends starting with fresh measurements — bust, underbust, waist, high hip, full hip, and torso length for one-pieces.
“Swim sizing varies dramatically by brand,” she explains. “Relying on your ‘usual size’ is one of the biggest reasons online swim purchases fail.”
Fabric matters just as much as silhouette. Higher elastane blends may feel forgiving at first, but can relax over time. Denser knits and performance fabrics provide structure and shaping. Adjustable straps, ties, and closures increase the likelihood that the suit contours to you — not the other way around.
“The most flattering swimsuit online usually isn’t the trendiest one!”

Incorporating Trends Without Losing Yourself
“The most authentic swim wardrobe balances signature pieces you love with a few curated trend-forward elements that feel like you,” Tara says. “It’s less about chasing every season and more about letting trends work for your style, not the other way around.”
When deciding what to try, she looks for trends that naturally enhance her core aesthetic — textured fabrics, retro silhouettes, earth and jewel tones — and skips those that feel forced or fleeting.
Longevity is key.
“The goal is selective experimentation,” she explains, “letting one trend element elevate versatile, high-quality pieces so my swim wardrobe always feels current, confident, and authentically me.”
