It takes a certain kind of photographer to make a model feel instantly at ease, confident, and completely themselves. That’s exactly what Richard Guaty does, and it’s why his work always feels natural and full of life. Having spent years in front of the camera as a model himself, he brings a unique perspective that allows him to capture not just beauty, but real moments.
For nearly five years, Richard has been the eye behind our shoots here at Helen Jon, so, in honor of World Photography Day, we interviewed Richard to talk about his creative process and the Helen Jon memories that stand out most.
About Richard
How long have you been a professional photographer — and how did you get started?
I’ve been working as a professional photographer for over 10 years. It started with a deep love for capturing people and places, and evolved into fashion and swimwear photography. Once I realized people were seeking me out for shoots, it clicked that this could be my career.
Was there a moment when you knew photography was what you wanted to do?
Yes — I was on a spontaneous shoot at golden hour, chasing the last light of the day with a model, and the photos came out stunning in just 15 minutes. That rush, the creativity, and the way everything aligned — I knew I was built for this.
Photography Philosophy
How would you describe your photography style?
Natural, minimal, and clean — I focus on capturing energy, personality, and the story within a frame. I’m drawn to real light and environments that feel effortless yet refined.
What’s your absolute favorite part about being behind the camera?
When the subject forgets the camera is there. That shift when they relax and start being themselves — that’s where the magic is.
Can you briefly walk us through your creative process when planning or capturing a shoot?
I scout locations based on light — that’s key. I keep the plan loose but purposeful. I like to connect with the subject beforehand, keep the energy flowing, and let inspiration strike in the moment. Flexibility is everything.
What advice would you give to young or emerging photographers just getting started?
Don’t wait for the perfect moment or gear. Get out there, shoot a lot, learn by doing, and develop your eye. Also — protect your time and value your work.
Helen Jon Shoots
What drew you specifically to fashion and swimwear photography?
The energy, the sunlight, the beaches. But beyond that, I love helping people feel confident in their skin and capturing that effortlessly cool vibe that fashion and swimwear uniquely express.
Name a few of your favorite HJ locations you’ve shot in.
I loved The Moorings, FL, and the beachfront property that was used for one shoot. The calm beach almost had a national park vibe, and it was just so visually pleasing.
What’s your favorite moment from a Helen Jon shoot (or a shoot that stands out in your memory)?
I think it's when we all burst out laughing after realizing the person I was complimenting turned out to be right there in front of me.
In your opinion, what makes a great swimwear or lifestyle photo?
The best photos feel alive and effortless — like a real moment frozen in perfect clarity. It also feels like you’re there and immersed in the essence of the image.
Just for Fun
Outside of work, what are some of your favorite hobbies and interests?
Surfing is one of my biggest passions — catching waves in Uluwatu, Indonesia, was life-changing. I’m also deeply interested in wellness, business, and exploring culture through food, design, and conversations.
